XM Satellite Radio

XM Satellite Radio is the most popular provider of satellite radio, although it admittedly has only one true competitor — Sirius. Boasting over 100 commercial-free stations, there is something to be enjoyed by even the most discriminating listeners on XM Radio. The name, XM, was chosen to set it apart from the old way of listening to radio, which is via AM and FM. Indeed, radio satellite has emerged as the third method of radio, a method that many people believe is superior. XM currently has millions of paid subscribers in America and Canada, where the network is exclusively broadcast.

XM Radio is broadcast via geostationary satellites that orbit directly above the Earth's equator. This is the same method used by satellite television providers. When a satellite is in a geostationary orbit, it remains in one place, which helps reception of signals. However, satellite signals can and do degrade for various reasons, which is why XM Radio uses antennas on the ground to repeat signals to listeners' radios. XM's broadcasting methods are unique and efficient, resulting in crystal-clear audio from anywhere in North America.

XM Radio is the most widely available satellite radio network, thanks to its partnership with General Motors, Hyundai, Nissan, Honda, Toyota and Volkswagen/Audi. Now, there are over 100 car models being manufactured with XM equipment as an option. In addition to cars, Direct TV, Clear Channel Communications and several major airlines offer XM channels to their customers. XM has only one competitor in the satellite radio industry, which is Sirius Radio. However, it was announced in February 2007 that the two giants are brokering for a merger, which will only make the two providers more visible to the public eye.
