At TV Geekery, watching television and keeping up on the latest television happenings is more than a hobby: it’s an obsession. Fueling our obsession requires that we stay on top of the latest TV news with the help of some top-notch blogs. Recently, our obsession for TV begged the question: which television blogs have the biggest reach? With nowhere to turn to answer this question definitively, we thought it would be an interesting exercise to rank all of the blogs in the TV niche using an objective formula.

In ranking the top gadget blogs, our goal was to show — using objective data from reliable sources — which blogs about TV are the most popular. To this end, we used data for these four metrics to calculate the rankings:

— Google PageRank

— Technorati Authority

— Bloglines Subscribers

Methodology

To begin, we found a set of Web sites that met a certain criteria. To become a member of the set of Web sites to be ranked, a Web site must, as of August 13, 2007:

be ranked in the top 200 for the phrase tv blog on Google; and

be primarily a blog about TV.

For each metric, a score was assigned on a 0–10 scale. For Google PageRank, raw PageRank data was scored. For Alexa Rank, Technorati Authority, and Bloglines Subscribers, the Web sites were broken up into deciles. If a Web site was in the 0>10% decile, a 1 was scored; for the 10>20% decile, a 2 was scored; and so on, up to a 10 being scored for the 90–100% decile. If no data was available, a 0 was scored.

The overall score for each Web site is the sum of the scores of the four metrics. In the event of a tie in overall score, the tie is broken according to the Alexa Rank raw data.

If you don’t own a television and you want to catch a recent BBC news segment or the last episode of Heroes, never fear. You can watch hundreds of television stations online. You can choose among various TV portals, or you can gain access to specific stations through direct connections to their online streaming videos. In fact, the list below is a mere sampling of the many channels you can watch online.

Some channels don’t broadcast 24/7 and, depending upon your operating system, you may need to download plug-ins, add-ons, or software. However, before you install anything on your computer, see if you can view the station without the download. For instance, Choose and Watch states that the Firefox browser needs the Firefox add-on called IE Tab to view broadcasts. However, I was able to enjoy every channel without the add-on. The only difference between viewing any given station between Firefox and IE7 was that the viewing screen was slightly smaller in Firefox.

With that said, unfortunately, a few stations still rely on IE to deliver. So if you aren’t receiving the broadcast in Firefox or Safari, etc., you might want to switch to your IE browser for better luck. Also, rural users can tap into Satellite Internet (as well as Satellite TV) if your connection is spotty or nonexistent. In fact, the Internet TV channels are similar to regular TV channels in that you need to consider whether your technology is satellite or cable compatible.

To watch a TV channel, simply pick a link under a desired genre in the list below.

   Comedy

Adult Swim: Find a free lineup of continuously run episode clips from the Cartoon Network’s “grown-up” humor department.

America Free TV Comedy: Free classic comedy (think Laurel and Hardy, etc.).

Cartoon Network: View free clips that contain scenes from animated films, behind the scenes commentary, music, and podcasts.

Comedy Central: The “mother lode” of comedy, including movie clips, interviews, and routines, all for free.
